Marriage is 2 families coming together, which is still true in most cultures. Was Romeo and Juliet the romanticized moment that destroyed that concept as it was immortalized and is read in most high school English Lit. classes?

I wonder what it was that made, or at least allowed, the American culture to be so individual in the concept of even family.

I have never even thought about that. It very well could be the spark that lead to the gigantic explosion. It's so sad that 2 families can't come together. I think it's a lack of effort. It's easier to follow stereotypes about this 'mother-in-law' or that grandpa. Americans have become lazy. That's why there are so many divorces and so many screwed up homes. because once things get ugly no one wants to put forth the effort and try to make it better..

yep, we will only allow families to be part of the nuclear family if they do it on our terms...sadly this is not a Christian principle, but it's a Christian practice. ugh.
